The Markaz is pleased to offer a new beginning Persian class for 10 weeks beginning Saturday, March 17, 1:30-4:30 pm, with native instructor Shahrzad Sabbagh. Persian is one of the top 30 languages, spoken by more than 100 million people around the world including in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the United States. Indeed, Los Angeles has one of the largest populations of Persian speakers anywhere and is affectionately known by Iranian Americans as Tehrangeles. About Shahrzad Sabbagh
As an instructor in contemporary Persian (Farsi), Shahrzad Sabbagh is an enthusiastic teacher and native speaker who brings a plethora of resources to support her students. She is a linguist who specializes in teaching, translation and interpreting. Her training is in storytelling and academic research. She holds an M.A. from San Francisco State University in Cinema Studies (thesis research on the new wave in Iranian cinema) and a B.A. in Dramatic Literature (English and Farsi) from Tehran University of Art. She has been a translator and/or instructor for the Farhang Foundation, Berlitz, Golestan Kids School (Berkeley), and an editor/writer for Farabi Quarterly, the Iranian cinema journal; Kanoon; Iran Novin; and BaniFilm, newspaper on Iranian cinema. She was also a reporter and columnist for the Tehran Cinema Museum Bulletin. Shahrzad believes in the power of personal development through language and storytelling.
